Swivel Joints Technology Explained

Swivel Joints are key components for the transportation of liquids and gases for a wide range of industries

Swivel Joints – Basic Working Principles

Whether you work in the chemical, petrochemical, or oil and gas industries, among others, swivel joints are key components. They guarantee smooth transportation of liquids and gases between fixed piping and movable equipment.

Swivel joints also play an essential role in hose reels, piping systems, wastewater treatment, just to name a few. Their use in loading arms provides flexibility, easy handling and maximum safety for operators.

It also sustains optimal performance under high internal pressures, traction and bending forces.

Swivel Joint D2000Which Swivel Joint Should I choose?

Swivel joints are essential elements for the loading arm industry. This industry requires, above all, components with easy handling and low-wear characteristics. At Emco Wheaton, we offer a wide range of swivel joints that will improve your operational safety and performance reliability.

Here’s a comparative list of Emco Wheaton’s swivel joint portfolio for loading arms:

Swivel Joint D2000

  • Suitable for various fluid handling applications (mineral oil industry, food industry, chemical industry)
  • Compact, sandwich design
  • Easy to replace seals (without disassembling the whole loading arm)
  • No dirt ingress into the ball track thanks to a double O-ring sealing
  • High leak-proof capacity due to the smooth rotation and high bending moment capacity
  • Separated bearing module allowing a standard swivel joint to operate at temperatures ranging from -60 °C to +250 °C with a max operating pressure of 580 psi (40 bar)

PTFE D2000 Swivel Joint

  • Suitable for extremely aggressive products thanks to its special design
  • No contact between the product and the carbon steel component as leakage goes through the leak detection port

Single Track Swivel Joint D0002

  • Extended service life due to hardened and fine machined ball track with stainless steel plated seal surface
  • Operating temperature of -60 °C to +250 °C and design pressure up to 50 bar.
  • No need to remove the swivel joint from the product pipe pipeline while changing the seal
  • Can be relubricated via grease nipples
  • Available lightweight aluminum version without hardened ball tracks suitable for normal duty application

PTFE D2000 Swivel Joint

  • Suitable for extremely aggressive products thanks to its special design
  • No contact between the product and the carbon steel component as leakage goes through the leak detection port

Swivel Joint D1133

  • Variant of the basic D0002
  • Compact and low-weight solution for nearly all chemical transfer applications
  • Minimal structural length and weight
  • Minimal external diameter
  • No dirt introduced to the ball track thanks to a double O-ring sealing
  • Suitable for handling extremely aggressive media thanks to its full stainless steel inner body

Twin Track Swivel Joint D1010

  • Carbon steel, hardened version suitable for heavy loads (typically for Emco Wheaton Marine Loading Arms)
  • Possible to change the seal without removing the swivel joint from the pipeline due to the internal flange
  • Operating temperature of -60 °C to +250 °C and design pressure up to 150 bar.

Cryogenic Swivel Joint D0383

  • Compact, sandwich design
  • Easy to replace seals (without disassembling the whole loading arm)
  • Extended service life due to cladded and fine machined ball track
  • Operating temperature down to -196 °C and design pressure up to 40 bar.
